When I moved back to South Dakota I wanted
to sculpt an extinct bison wolf. Just as I started to
execute the wax, it was announced on public television that a remnant population of the
bison wolf was found in Saskatchewan. Genetic studies were being performed to see just how
far the genetic material was from the timber wolf.
The wolves found have a much longer leg and its light phase, instead of
being silver in tone is more tawny or golden. Its head is far more massive. It fit
all of the old descriptions of what used to be the huge wolf that followed the bison
herds.
I slightly changed the composition of the piece to include a bison skull
to show that this animal followed the near extermination of the bison. When
they found these wolves, I added melting patches of snow to indicate spring and the
renewal of life..
