Giraffes come from an ancient mammal
form, which is much more massive in the shoulders than the hindquarters. This produces a
run with a thrust emanating from a pulling action. Most of the current mammals are more
massive in the hindquarters producing a thrust or pushing action from behind.
Before I start a sculpture I commit myself to research. I studied giraffe
behavior, biology, feeding patterns and herd interactions. I found out that there
are actually seven subspecies of giraffes located in different areas throughout
Africa. That really surprised me. You can tell the difference between these giraffes by
their coat patterns. I
chose to sculpt the reticulated giraffe which has very rectangular and
clearly defined edges to its spots.
